Basic Sewing 101

(An almost-free Class for ASG Members Only)

Date: Saturday, March 22, 2025
Time: 1 to 4 pm
Location: Lake Forest Park

Well, you USED to sew garments, but now you sew quilts—because quilts are flat and size is a choice that nobody can criticize.  You feel fear at the thought of sewing garments-to-wear. You don’t like waste and patterns are (a) EXPENSIVE and (b) are not the same fit as they used to be.  What happened in the industry?   Would you LIKE to dress well, but you don’t know how to start? Everything ready-made in the store seems poorly made. Somehow, you got stuck? Let ASG assist you.

Greater Seattle ASG is now offering a very basic seminar to 8 people (who are not confident of their skill level and feel a bit rusty and out-of-touch with fashion today) who need guidance on how to select and alter a pattern, how to choose the right fabric and notions, how to lay out a corrected pattern and mark things with modern methods and, with some help, actually make something that you like and will wear.

We will help you get up-to-date measurements of your body and show you how to relate these to a printed pattern so you will know what needs to be wider or narrower, longer or shorter or whatever else you can do before you cut out a fashion fabric. Gaining pattern alteration skills is a real game-changer.

The fee is $1, and you must pre-register and you must commit to be there as space is very limited. Only 8 people will be admitted, first come, first served.

If this initial class is popular, we may do a repeat of it later this summer.  If we have demand, we will consider a Basic Sewing 102 to teach you the most efficient ways to sew and press your garment.  More news on this will come in the future.

Members may view registration and location information on the “News/Events/Retreats”  page under the “MEMBERS” tab.

ASG National Zoom Meeting: Sew Sustainable
Unraveled…The Life and Death of a Garment

Featuring Seattle’s Own Cathy Katte!

Date: March 25, 2025
Time: 5 pm to 6 pm (Pacific Time)
Zoom Meeting. See asg.org for log-in information

Join ASG member Cathy Katte as she shares insights from the book titled Unraveled (available on Amazon or from your favorite bookseller), a groundbreaking chronicle of the birth—and death—of a pair of jeans.

In Unraveled, author, researcher, and advocate Maxine Bedat lays bare the full life and death of a pair of jeans and takes us inside the factories and warehouses to show how our fashion consumption fuels environment and social inequality worldwide. She challenges our assumptions about consumer roles and offers an ambitious vision of a marketplace that puts people and the planet first. The author shares suggestions for actions everyone can take starting today.

Cathy will also be sharing a jean jacket she created from two pairs of jeans.

Saturday, April 5 2025

Come learn the Japanese hand embroidery technique, Hitomezashi sashiko with the dynamic DIY duo, Shannon Roudhán and Jason Bowlsby. Shannon & Jason will guide us step-by-step through the process of creating a set of three evolving stitch patterns. Each stitch pattern is invaluable for surface design, visible mending and embellishing garments, home décor, and of course, quilts… basically anything made of fabric that you can pierce with a sashiko needle.

Shannon & Jason will also share examples of Moyouzashi sashiko, explain the difference between the two techniques and speak directly to modern applications for hand quilting, embroidery, surface design, and visible mending.

This event is open to ASG members only and is limited to 30 participants. Not a member? Joining is easy! Just click here: https://www.asg.org/join-asg/ Be sure to affiliate with the WA/Seattle Chapter!

Identifying and Reading Drag Lines
A Webinar with Sarah Veblen

Garment fitting can be tricky, with plenty of advice out there sometimes missing the mark. Instead of getting frustrated when solutions don’t work, consider a more insightful approach: learning to read the fabric by identifying drag lines! This method allows you to understand fitting issues better and, with practice, you’ll find it liberating. Join Sarah on Zoom and explore various types of drag lines through photos and see how she uses a half-scale dress form to demonstrate real-time adjustments. The goal is to empower you to tackle any fitting challenge on your own. You’ve got this!

This presentation will be recorded. The recording will be available to paid registrants for three weeks after the event.

Open to ASG members only. Not a member? Not a problem! Click here to join: https://www.asg.org/join-asg/ Be sure to choose the WA/SEATTLE chapter.

Cost: $32.95
