We meet six times a year and also enjoy seeing each other at other chapter group mtgs, classes & events. We meet next on Wed, Mar 18, from 7:00 to 8:30pm. Discussion questions and Zoom meeting link are below.
Agenda
- Brief announcements, incl sharing about Sew Expo and the Dumas Bay retreat
- Discussion on By Her Own Design: a Novel of Ann Lowe, Fashion Designer to the Social Register by Piper Huguley
- Please come with suggestions for July and September titles; reminder that you’ve already read or listened to your book suggestion and loved it enough to recommend to us! Non-fiction and fiction titles are welcome.
- Reminder of May book: Wednesday, May 20: Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker, a novel by Jennifer Linda Chiaverini
We usually start our discussion with what interested each of us about the book. And, here are some Discussion questions to ponder about:

This is an exhaustive list, about 10 questions for each of the 43 chapters! - List of discussion questions on a GoodReads page about By Her Own Design:
1. How did the circumstances of Ann’s young years allow her to dream big?
2. Did her missing father contribute to the decisions she made in her life?
3. Mrs. Josephine Lee was a real woman. Why do you think she was so good to Ann Lowe?
4. Who do you think helped Ann the most in her climb to be a Negro fashion designer?
5. Why do you think the high-society clientele that Ann designed for always sought to lower her prices?
6. Were you surprised by Ann’s decision to design for only white clients?
7. Should Ann have stayed to obtain her education at S.T. Taylor Design School?
8. The conversations between Ann and Jackie on Jackie’s wedding day were fictionalized. I had to find some way to explain why Ann never got another commission from Jackie. Do you think Ann overstepped her boundaries in telling Jackie she should be glad to have the father she had?
9. Did Ann go too far in reaching for her dream to be considered a Negro fashion designer?
10. Did Ann Lowe have a happy life in your opinion?
